The arrival of the pole, titled Northern Wolves, is the latest phase in the Aboriginal Gathering Place鈥檚 Community Totem Pole Project, which brings together Tahltan-Tlingit and M膩ori master carvers.

A totem pole more than 25 feet tall was delivered in dramatic fashion to the (AGP) at Emily Carr University this summer.

Titled Northern Wolves, the pole began its journey near Terrace, BC, where master carvers Dempsey Bob (Tahltan-Tlingit) and Stan Bevan (Tahltan-Tlingit) had been working on it for over two years.

Upon arriving at 全民彩票, it was uncrated while still aboard the truck, and then craned up to the outdoor area on the second floor of the university.

鈥淚t was exciting, but also so much tension,鈥 Connie Watts, associate director of Aboriginal Programs at 全民彩票, says. 鈥淟ike, real tension. So much work went into the pole 鈥 to see it just hanging there, suspended, and it鈥檚 just so massive 鈥︹

Fortunately, she adds, the crew headed by Sarah Hancock was 鈥渁mazing,鈥 and executed a flawless placement of the pole onto a series of dollies built by designer Patrick Christie (BDes 2011). Connie, Patrick and other 全民彩票 community members then joined Sarah鈥檚 crew in wheeling the massive pole through the school and into the AGP, where it has remained under cover pending the next 鈥 and final 鈥 phase of carving.

The Nuu-Chah-Nulth refer to a covered totem pole as 鈥渞esting,鈥 Connie notes, although artist Laura Wee L谩y L谩q uses a different term.

鈥淟aura talks about the ancestors coming in to help you when you鈥檙e working,鈥 Connie says. 鈥淪he says that when you鈥檙e not working, you cover the pole out of respect for your ancestors, so they鈥檙e not trying to come in to help you when you're not working; so you鈥檙e not teasing them.鈥

But covering the pole has a practical function as well, Connie notes; beneath the cloth is a plastic drape which prevents too much moisture from escaping the wood too quickly 鈥 a situation which can lead to cracking.

The arrival of Northern Wolves at the AGP is the latest phase in the Community Totem Pole Project, an AGP initiative that will bring Dempsey and Stan into collaboration with M膩ori carver Lyonel Grant this summer. While much of the pole was carved and painted prior to its arrival at the AGP, the middle three feet have been left untouched. This middle section will be finished by Lyonel when he travels to 全民彩票 in the summer.

鈥淭he M膩ori鈥檚 culture is so similar to ours, with their weavers, carvers, dancers, singers, longhouses and canoe culture,鈥 Dempsey says in a statement.

The pole, which tells the migration story of the wolves, eagles and grizzly bears, 鈥渆xemplifies the cultural relevance of movement, migration, exploration and our connection to our land,鈥 according to the artist statement by Dempsey Bob. The movement of the figures points to this southward migration, with the eagle and wolf heads protruding downward, 鈥渙ut of the traditional totem pole into a sculptural expression. The deeper carvings, the projected figures and the flowing hair make this work come to life.鈥
